It seems like everyone is blogging these days, right? Well, actually if you are an entrepreneur or a freelancer you should take blogging seriously. Why? It helps you to keep your website updated for one reason and it is a great marketing tool to bring traffic to your website.
Apart from that I find that blogging also helps you to improve your skills when it comes to writing or also in the field of graphic design if you are like me and create your graphics by yourself instead of using stock photos, which of course also is an option for everyone who is too busy to create graphics or just does not feel like doing it. Another good thing about blogging is that it helps you to structure your thoughts into a well-written text, to reflect on certain aspects and of course to connect with like-minded folks. I just started blogging but so far I am a fan of it already!
"BUT I CANNOT WRITE WELL"
A blog can also help you to overcome your fear of writing if you think writing is just a thing you are not good. Writing is another skill you can acquire through practise. So when blogging consistently your writing will automatically improve. Writing your blog helps you to find your own writing style and voice.
It is a great way to share your knowledge and voice. I think saying 'I'm a bad writer' is nothing that should stop you. All the great writers out there were also not the best writers yet when just starting out. It comes with practise, the more you write, the better you will be. Believe me!
BUT I'M AFRAID
I already planned to blog back in the days in 2012/2013 but at that time I was so shy and did not dare to get myself out there, I feared the exposure. I already set up at blog at blogger but never ever published anything. The blog was just sitting there and even though I always loved writing and designing I was paralysed by fear. Fear of exposing myself, fear of showing myself and sharing my thoughts.
At that time I had lots of health issues, horrible autoimmune flare-ups from Hashimoto's disease and many other problems as well. So most probably it was also not the best timing to exposing myself, I am at a better place now and pretty much left the fear of exposure behind.
So as you can see, this one should not stop you either. If I could get started with a blog and my own business, you can do it as well! If you are too afraid right now, give it a little more time and start then. But don't wait too long either! I know from my own experience that we never feel ready for certain things (like starting your own business or also just starting your own blog) but sometimes we just have to jump right into it and start. If we always wait until we feel ready, we might never start.
GOOGLE & SEO
Google loves websites with good content and if you create good and valuable content, Google will automatically rank you higher. Of course it takes time, ranking higher in Google and improving your SEO takes time. I am no expert by any means yet when it comes to SEO and online marketing but I am slowly working myself into it these days since I started my freelance journey and blogging. Marketing is something that I pretty much always neglected back in the days when I was still studying because at that time I never thought that it could come in handy one day. But now I of course get myself into it and trying to learn as much about it as possible. Anyways, to make things short, blogging is good for SEO and Google is going to like your website very much whenever your published content is good.
ABOUT WHAT SHOULD I BLOG?
You probably think there are so many blogs out there already, why should I blog as well and about what? Everything seems to be covered already. Well that might be true but no one is blogging about it like you do! Therefore finding your own voice and style is so important. So think about a topic that interests you and start writing about it. From what I have learned so far, you should never just blog about everything or just blog for the sake of blogging. Nope, it should be about something you share a deep love or passion for.
I'm a freelance graphic designer blogging about business issues, design, self-development and wellbeing. You should narrow your focus down instead of blogging about too many different topics. I have tons of interests but I decided to narrow my blog topics down to the things I just mentioned above and not get started to write another lifestyle blog about fashion, food, business, education, traveling etc...well you get the big picture, right?
I might write a blog post about traveling once in a while as well but it is not the main topic of my blog, I decided against it since there are a million travel blogs out there already and I guess I should have started a few years ago whenever I was still traveling a lot more than I do lately. So instead I chose to blog about the things I deal with on a daily basis.
START YOUR BLOG TODAY
So guys, especially the ones with online businesses! Get the blog party started now! If you have a website already, open the blog section and start writing and creating great content. If not, then head over to the blogging platform of your trust and get started. Free options are blogger.com and wordpress.com (don't confuse wordpress.com with the self-hosted wordpress.org). If you go to wordpress.org the platform itself is free but you have to pay for hosting and your domain. I tried wordpress.org sometime last year but never really got the hang of it but on the other hand I also had not put too much time into it either. Then I came along Squarespace which is the platform that I use now. It costs money but it also is super user-friendly. If you are not a techi person either, Squarespace might be for you as well. Well, do your research about all the blogging platforms I just mentioned above and find your right fit.
