The Freelance Issue No.22 // learners are earners

So lately I am all diving in into the world of self-development and I gotta say I am seriously hooked. It is such a vast and interesting topic, I can’t get enough of it. So the other day I was watching a webinar by Marie Forleo and one of the phrases that stuck with me was this one, ‘learners are earners’. It might sound so simple but it is true. I remember ever since I was a little child, I always put my education first. And even though I don’t believe in the traditional way of education (going to school, getting tons of certificates and degrees and so on) anymore, I still believe that education is the key to make this world a better place, to improve yourself and your life and that it is the one thing that can solve problems like poverty and feeling desperation. Educating yourself means taking matters into your own hands, educating yourself means taking responsibility - for yourself and maybe in the future also for others.

I have spent a shitload of money on traditional education and now in the past few years on let’s say online education and self-development. Most of it was absolutely worth the bucks, there were very few exceptions where I felt it was a waste of time and money. So when you spend money on educating yourself, you invest in yourself. Yes, it might cost some money in the beginning but your investment will pay off, financially and especially in personal development. You learn for yourself, you learn new skills you can use and you learn to not sell yourself short anymore.

On a side note, talking about selling yourself short here; parts of today’s blog graphic I used from a pro-bono project that the guy rejected in the end after telling me how awful my work is, work that I did for him for FREE! Hello baby, that shit ain’t gonna happen anymore. I learn and then I am going to earn accordingly now!

I am getting super serious now about getting that business thing running. I know that I am skilled and that I have talents and work ethics many other people wished they had. Not that this ever helped me in the corporate world, where I always ended in low-paying stressful jobs, but from now on this is gonna pay off…but for me, being my own boss. I am horrible at selling and marketing myself and my services but now I am tackling it, now I am learning it. So possibly the services I am going to offer might change slightly, but I am excited to see where the journey takes me. I am multipassionate and now I am finding out on what kind of business I really want to put my focus on and which things should be kept as a hobby. The online-shop is going to open but first I want to get clarity, also I will offer services but same here, clarity first. I have been working in the teaching industry since I attended university and since I believe so much in education and see it as one of the major things I fiercely believe it, I will try to find out in which way I can incorporate into a business model that also serves and helps other people.

The next few weeks I will focus on learning new skills, deep diving into the vision I have for myself, my life and my business and then implement everything I learn. Last year I took a teacher training, that course cost me 1600 Euros and it payed already off for me. It was a lot of money, a very big investment but it brought me already very far, I am much further now than where I was before the training. And now I did another big investment into a training I truly believe in and I can’t wait to see where this is going to take me. So, learners are earners and I am a vivid and happy learner and hopefully soon also earner!
