Abuela

Today I designed a typography logo dedicated to my grandma who passed away 14 years ago. Today would have been her birthday. Abuela is the Spanish word for grandmother and the date is when she was born. My relationship to my maternal grandparents was a very special one because as a kid I spent lots of time with them, I was raised by my mom and my grandparents and losing them when I was in my early 20ies was extremely hard for me because it meant that I lost a big and very important part of my little family.

It is important to honour the people who gave everything for us to make sure we can become the best version of ourselves. My grandparents generation went through the most horrible times you can think of. They were growing up as kids during the most awful fascist times that led to WW2. Even though they experienced horrible childhoods and grew up in the toughest times, they were the most amazing, good-hearted people you can imagine. It makes me sad that they had to live a life where not much joy was pleasant and I feel it is our generation’s legacy to bring as much good, love and light to this world as we can in order to make this place a better place.

My dear Oma, I am so grateful for everything you have done for me and all the love you gave me and I wished you were still here so we could spend your birthday together today.
