The Wellness Edition No.67 // Judgemental People

Let’s talk about people being judgemental today. If you have been following along for a while, you might remember that I entered the world of online dating lately (more separate blog posts will follow on that soon) and while chatting with different men I realised how judgemental some of them are and that it is a very common thing in German society anyways that people in this country are extremely judgemental.

In Germany pople love to categorise you, we even have a German word for it which is called ‘Schubladendenken’. I give you a brief translation here, a Schublade is a drawer and denken is the German verb for to think. So basically people here will mentally categorise you and put you in a drawer, I hope you understand what I mean here with the the brief translation and explanation of ‘Schubladendenken’. So you are automatically categorised and judged by the people you meet.

For my part, i try not to be judgemental at all, I hate being judged so I also don’t wait to judge others. I will judge people when they behave in a a very bad way and intentionally hurt me or mistreat me, then I will come to some kind of judgement but normally I try not to judge at all because what other people do or how they live is none of my business as long as it does not leave me or others in a bad position or me or anyone else pain.

I don’t know why people are so fond of judging others immediately, I really wonder. I think it is not just a German phenomenon but I get the feeling that over here being judgemental is especially a big thing. Gabby Bernstein even wrote a whole book on this issue called ‘The Judgment Detox’ and I can totally recommend this book to anyone who struggles with being judged or being judgemental. Basically it all boils down that people judge others while in reality judging themselves. That has to do with personal insecurities and issues.

Maybe we can relate this insecurity on a whole level to German society and maybe that explains why people are overly judgemental here. This is a just a wild guess from my side but looking at how well the above mentioned ‘Schubladendenken’ works here and how much pleasure Germans get out of categorising and judging people, it might be one of the reasons for people being judgemental to such an extreme extent here.
